SCA (NZ) Update – September 2016
SCA (NZ) President Report
As the inaugural president, I am delighted to see the encouragement SCA’s newest Chapter is getting both locally on a National Level and Internationally! We have been overwhelmed by the support provided to us by our trans-tasman neighbours and through the generosity of state chapters (a big thank you to Katrin and the QLD board especially), the national HQ team and visits from Erik and Kim, the Education Committee and various other members and sponsors we have grown from strength to strength.
My vision is to transform, develop and improve the face of the Multi-Unit Sector, create communities and raise the bar in New Zealand. We are already witnessing the positive results of founding the peak industry body to lead in education, advocacy and networking, helping me reach my personal goals and all sectors to hold the industry to the highest standards.
We continue to learn and develop with the backing of a fantastic international brand and look forward to working with you all moving forward.
Advocacy & Legislation
Our Legislation is once again under review and the property market in NZ remains a hot topic in the media. SCA (NZ) have had a significant media presence and I have been asked to assist on the MBIE advisory board both individually and on behalf of SCA (NZ). I have also been lucky enough to contribute to a book commissioned by Penguin on home ownership in NZ, and conducted various other interviews. The government representatives are looking to our neighbours for examples of successful reforms and the way forward!
Education
The Accreditation pathway is ready to go live in NZ! The SCA(NZ) sub-committee (Tim Jones (Glaister Ennor) ,Clinton Baker (Price Baker Berridge), David Watt, Liza Fry-Irvine (Pidgeon Law), Katerina Wendt & myself) have been working hard on the contextualisation of the A100 into the NZ 100, and we are pleased to announce the first course will be launched early 2017. We are delighted to be working with RMIT University for the accreditation pathway, which will enable us to roll out mutually recognized vocational qualifications for SCA (NZ). Providing key education & training to the industry was one of our execs key goals for 2016, so super exciting breaking news on the path to raising the bar! A big thank you to our sub-committee for all their time and dedication & of course to the National Education Committee, especially Michael Hurley, Julie McLean & Marietta Metzger for all their wise words and advice!
Industry News
The new Unitary Plan for Auckland is close to adoption, and this will potentially double the amount of Body Corporates and Strata Units in Auckland alone, so it’s tough to look out across the skyline and not see a crane from wherever you perch. This is an exciting time for both the Jaffa’s, and the rest of the country and the demand for housing spreads throughout NZ. Not a day goes by when the property and in particular the apartment sector don’t get media coverage, with even our PM JK suggesting apartment living as a great option for home ownership!
